Mexican Food Chronicles - The Savory Origins of Guacamole

Mexican cuisine has plenty of famous culinary creations known and loved worldwide, including tacos, salsa, and quesadillas, but arguably the most popular is guacamole. This avocado-based dip is used to garnish many different Mexican foods or as a perfect complement to fresh, warm tortilla chips.

Guacamole is incredibly popular, and pretty much every Mexican restaurant puts it on their menu, but where did it originally come from?

Avocados have long been an important part of Central and South American cuisine. Their ease of growth and harvesting in these regions served as a readily available protein source for the Aztec people, who would smash the avocados and serve them in a pureed form. Once the Spaniards arrived, they took a liking to the green avocado puree, and the popularity of the avocado began to take off. Now, centuries later, guacamole remains a wildly popular dish that everyone knows and loves.

Not only is guacamole incredibly delicious, but it also boasts some impressive health benefits.

Avocados are an excellent plant-based protein source, perfect for vegetarians or anyone looking to cut back on meat. Naturally, avocados contain healthy fats that can increase the absorption of other nutrients from foods, lower cholesterol, and boost overall mood. Since guacamole is made using avocados, spices, and occasionally onions and tomatoes, you will be deliciously nourishing your body, thanks to the nutritious power of avocados!
