The History of Tequila

Out of all of the spirits in the world, nothing compares to the distinct and earthy flavors of

tequila. Dating back to the 16th century, tequila has long been a distilled favorite, boasting the

creation of popular drinks like margaritas and the famous Tequila Sunrise. But where did

tequila first come from, and how did it gain such popularity worldwide?

Tequila’s History & Origins

While the first official recognition for tequila dates back to the 16th century, some scholars argue

that a form of tequila existed in early Aztec times. The drink that they’re referring to is different

than the tequila we know and love today, but it was made by fermenting the agave plant’s sap;

The main ingredient for tequila.

Fast forward to the 1500s; the Spanish began invading the Aztec Empire. During this time, the

Spanish were drinking brandy as their spirit of choice, but supplies were running low. As a

result, they began distilling what they had on hand, which happened to be agave. For centuries,

this method was used to create an alcoholic drink that the Spanish found sufficient. Still, it

wasn’t until the 1700s that the infamous Cuervo family manufactured the first “official” tequila.

The Influence of American Culture

Tequila is undoubtedly one of the most popular spirits in America, especially with the

introduction of mixed drinks. Since its beginning, tequila was pretty much exclusive to the region

in which it was produced. However, tequila got a formal introduction to the United States at the

1863 Chicago World’s Fair, where it would soon take hold in the American market. Now,

centuries later, the US receives roughly 80% of tequila exports.

Tequila has also become an icon in American culture, with celebrities and musicians boasting

their love of the unique spirit. It also has absorbed the spotlight by earning a place on restaurant

menus across the country, not only in mixed drinks but also in cooking.
