Taco di Minero – Miner’s Tacos
There is a debate going over the exact details over the origination of tacos. Some researchers claim that these originated in the 19th century, while some believe that this food became a part of Mexican food in the 19th century.
Jeffrey M. Pilcher has been studying tacos for more than two decades. Being a history professor at the University of Minnesota, he dedicated a major part of his life researching over the origination of tacos. According to his studies, the invention of tacos dates back to the 18th century, and tacos at the time of invention were known as tacos de mineros, which means miner’s tacos.
His research got featured in Smithsonian Magazine. According to Jeffrey, tacos are named after explosives that Mexican miners were using in the silver mines in the 19th century. There were small hand-rolled papers that contained gunpowder explosives to break the huge rock formations.
In the 18th century, tacos fell into the category of food for the working class, but by the 20th century, it became a popular form of food not just in Mexico but also in the United States of America. The tacos entered the U.S cuisine in the 19th century when Mexican immigrants begin setting up taco-selling businesses around various parts of the country.
Starting as street food, this fast-food soon made its way into almost every restaurant’s menu. Today the 4.5 billion Americans eat tacos every year, which is a crazy number!
