Mexican Food Chronicles - The Chimichanga Addiction

Chimichangas have long been a Mexican food favorite. The origin of this addictive deep-fried burrito creation is somewhat debated; Some claim that it first came about in the early 1940s when restaurant owner Woody Johnson experimented with his menu by throwing a burrito into a deep fryer. Others insist that the chimichanga was accidentally discovered when a burrito fell into the deep fryer at Monica Flin’s restaurant in 1922.  Either way, this hot and delicious take on the traditional burrito soon became a wildly popular Mexican food option, and chimichangas started popping up on Mexican restaurant menus all across the United States.

Chimichangas are typically filled with different types of meat and cheese. The most popular options are chicken, beef, or picadillo, deep fried and served with guacamole, sour cream, and pico de gallo. At Mazatlan Mexican Restaurant in Everett, Washington, we offer several different types of chimichangas on our menu. Here are three of our top chimichanga selections at Mazatlan:

Chimichanga with Rice and Beans: Our signature chimichanga is made the traditional way. Choose from chicken, picadillo, ground beef, or pork chile verde. We serve our chimichangas fried to golden perfection with cheese, sauce, guacamole, and sour cream.

Seafood Chimichangas: If you’re looking for a delicious and filling seafood option, look no further than our Seafood Chimichanga! We stuff a large flour tortilla with a mixture of shrimp, crab meat, and fish with celery and mushrooms and then deep fry it. Our Seafood Chimichangas are finished off with mild seasoning, our signature Salsa de Mariscos, sour cream, and guacamole.

Grilled Chimichanga: For a lighter, healthier alternative to the traditional chimichanga, give our Grilled Chimichanga a try. We make this option the same way as our regular chimichanga with your choice of filling, then grill it on all sides instead of deep-frying it. The outside still gets crisp from the grilling and is finished off with cheese, guacamole, sour cream, sauce, and a side of beans.

At Mazatlan, we love celebrating all of the delicious flavors of authentic Mexican cuisine. Our menu is full of delicious Mexican dishes inspired by traditional recipes, including tacos, enchiladas, salads, soups, tostadas, and more! We also have additional chimichanga options, plus several chimichanga combinations on the menu.
